April 2025

SLIP CASTING WITH WILD CLAY

The workshop explores slip-casting using a mix of wild and industrial clay, as a way to connect with local environments and trace the origins of the materials. The clay used was foraged in Italy as part of Clay Archives, an initiative investigating how harvesting can reveal territorial narratives and the role of clay in regions affected by shifting climates. Engaging with this raw material allows participants to explore the land’s geological history and its social, political, and ecological forces.

Slip-casting, a technique traditionally used for precise ceramic reproductions, will transform the harvested clay into new forms. Liquid clay, or slip, is poured into plaster moulds, forming a solid layer before the excess is drained. By casting familiar objects with a mix of wild and industrial clay, we explore the tension between the natural and the manufactured, questioning ideas of standardisation, authenticity, and material value.

Participants will learn to identify and process wild clay into slip, create multi-part moulds, and gain a comprehensive introduction to slip-casting. Each participant will leave with a reusable plaster mould and a slip-cast object made from the foraged clay, offering a tangible connection to material and place. Fired pieces will be available for collection a few weeks after the workshop end.

To take part, bring a small object suitable for casting—ideally a simple form with no undercuts, such as a small cup or vessel (max 10 x 8 cm). A selection of suitable objects will also be available. No prior experience is required, making this an opportunity for both beginners and those looking to deepen their understanding of clay, casting techniques, and material narratives.
